Jazz

Expect an energetic evening when Jonathan Baracio’s Quartet performs Friday, May 17, 8 p.m. at Cochera Cultural, Javier Mina 49, Ajijic.


pg17aBaracio will combine contemporary New York jazz and other genres, featuring Raul Carrillo on guitar, Paul Sabarobe on saxophone and Esteban Zamora on drums. Expect to hear some ofBaracio’s songs from his album “Ciclos y Cambios” (Cycles and Changes). Entrance: 150 pesos.

Guitarist

Tapatio guitarist Hugo Gracian performs at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo in Chapala Friday, May 17, 7 p.m.

After studying classical music with masters such as Fernando Raúl Martínez Peralta, Fernando Corona and Sergio Medina, this award-winning musician has gone on to perform at recitals and festivals in Colombia, Bolivia, Chile, United States, Spain, Italy, Germany and France. Gracian also teaches music at the University of Guadalajara, as well as the Jose Clemente Orozco Center for Art Education (CEDART) in Guadalajara.  Entrance: 100 pesos.

Gracian teams up with guitarists Francisco Martinez, Juan Carlos Mancilla and Felipe Diaz in another concert at the same venue, Friday, May 24, 7 p.m. Entrance: 150 pesos.

Film Aficionados

Lake Chapala Society (LCS) members can take advantage of Film Aficionados screenings each Thursday, 2 p.m. On May 23, “The Harder They Come” (1972, Jamaica) will be screened. Impoverished Jamaican musician Ivan (Jimmy Cliff) wants more out of life. So, he moves to the capital city, Kingston, where poverty and corruption dominate. One of the movie industry’s greatest and best-selling sound tracks of all-time. (102 minutes.)

Folk

Ethereal and shamanic performer Diego Perez presents Nacion Ekeko at the Mezcaleria, Morelos 12, Ajijic Thursday, May 23, 9 to 11 p.m.

The event includes music, dance, painting and projections to create a unique scene. The folkloric artist is currently on tour throughout Mexico, visiting magical and sacred places along the way. Pre-sale tickets: 50 pesos.

Playing theater

Children as young as five years old are welcome to participate at fun costume and acting workshops beginning Saturday, May 25 at La Ludoketa, Parroquia 1-A, Plaza Ajijic. This will be the first of many sessions running from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Chaquira art

An exhibition of art in chaquira beads by Ariart GDL, featuring the work of Meraki Carrasco Trejo, opens at Casa Luna, Ocampo 22, Ajijic, Saturday, May 25, 1 to 8 p.m. The show runs through June 6.

Spotlight Club

The 80’s Video Night Dance Party, Friday, May 31, 6 p.m., is a benefit for the Villa Infantil Orphanage playground. Cover: 50 pesos.

Mariachi Femenil Innovación Mexicana from Tlaquepaque plays Saturday, June 1. This group has over 3.5 million views on YouTube for their version of Bohemian Rhapsody. Tickets: 500 pesos with dinner, 300 pesos for show only.

Flamenco

Bajañi (a gypsy slang word for guitar) includes singer Julio de la Isla, guitarist Dary Muñoz, bassist Gilberto Rios and percussionist and dancer Carlos Ramirez. Experience this group Saturday, June 1, 8 p.m. at La Cochera Cultural, Javier Mina 49, Ajijic. Tickets are 200 pesos.

La Cochera Cultural offers flamenco dance classes Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 1 p.m. and 4 to 5 p.m. A month of classes costs 700 pesos.
