Shared path, unclear rules: Safety issues on the Chapala–Jocotepec Ciclovía

The Ciclovía is an auxiliary corridor to the highway that connects the north shore municipalities of Chapala and Jocotepec. It was designed with two lanes for the safe transit of cyclists, protected with low-level cement dividers, and enhanced with green area planters and night-time lighting fixtures. It is a value-added space for local mobility, sporting activity and tourism.

The route runs a length of about 24.6 kilometers, passing through Ajijic and San Juan Cosalá between the two municipal seats. In some sections, leisurely cyclists can spot scenic views of Lake Chapala. More importantly, it is a vital pathway for local workers who ride bikes daily to get to and from their places of employment.

However, there are some serious drawbacks to this alternative way of traveling by either automobile or public transportation.  Firstly, the proper use of the Ciclovía is not regulated by local ordinances. Traffic authorities have no guidelines to go by, and apparently little interest in guarding the safety of users.
