Don’t forget that Guadalajara-based, U.S. writer Michael Hogan will give a short talk entitled “The Expatriate Writer” at St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Guadalajara at noon, Sunday, September 25, after the English Mass.
St. Mark’s Anglican Church is located at Aztecas and Chichimecas, a two-minute drive north of Plaza Mexico.
USA Business Fair
The USA Business Fair, a free, all-day event that promises visitors business opportunities and jobs, is set for Saturday, October 1 at the NH Hotel in Guadalajara, Sao Paulo 2334, which is located at 1501 Avenida Americas, in Colonia Providencia. Represented at the fair, which has been organized by USA Seminarios, will be multilevel and franchise companies, such as Subway and Mary Kay Cosmetics.
At her stand at the fair, Gretchen Coffey of Mary Kay Cosmetics will offer “professional glamour makeovers,” she said, adding, “Tell anyone looking for work.”
At the fair, visitors can learn about Spanish language seminars in selling, negotiation and more. The seminars, which cost 75 to 125 dollars, will be offered locally a week after the fair near the same location by USA Seminarios. See www.usabusinessfair.com and www.usaseminarios.com.
Hotel opens
As part of a wider strategy to target businessmen in Latin America, the upmarket Westin hotel opened in Guadalajara last week.
Located beside the Expo Guadalajara, on Avenida Las Rosas, the 27-storey hotel has 221 rooms, with seasonally adjusted rates ranging 299 to 1,400 dollars per night.
Operated by the Starwood Hotels and Resorts chain, the Westin has a restaurant and special conference rooms with a maximum capacity of 250 persons. All suites are equipped with sudy areas and high speed wireless internet access.
The hotel will generate 135 jobs, said manager Walter Herbich, who also explained the hotel’s plan to target business tourism, with a location close to the Expo, the jewelry center, World Trade Center, Plaza del Sol and many corporate buildings.
Murals
Two large-sized murals now flank the performance stage in the city’s Tren Ligero (subway) station at the San Juan de Dios market.
Virgin travels to Europe
The revered Virgin of Zapopan will be packing her bags for a long-haul, transatlantic flight the day after she makes her triumphant annual return to her ancestral home at the Zapopan Basilica on October 12. The diminutive corn-husk statue of the Virgin Mary will be traveling to Zaragoza, Spain on a four-day visit as part of a cultural interchange between the two cities. She will be back in the Basilica during most of the Pan American Games, diocese representatives confirm.
