The day-long International Food Festival takes place at at the Centro de Amistad Internacional in Guadalajara. It begins about 1 p.m. and lasts until 8 p.m. The cost to enter is 20 pesos and dishes typically cost 80 pesos. Entertainment will be provided.
Guadalajara’s family social service agency, DIF, is behind the event, so proceeds will go for social assistance projects in the city.
The center is at Eulogio Parra 2539, 1 1/2 blocks from Lopez Mateos on Guadalajara’s west side, not far from the American School.
British gathering
All British citizens living in or visiting the area are invited to the next informal regular monthly gathering, taking place at the home of Rose Woodruff on Saturday, April 27, from 8 p.m. Just bring a bottle and a plate of your favorite grub. Call 3824-1034 for more details.
Mothers’ Day
The American Society of Jalisco (Amsoc) hosts its annual Mothers Day luncheon on Thursday, May 16, with food served from 12:30 p.m. On the menu is chicken milanesa, salad, potatoes, vegetables and desert. The cost is 120 pesos. Amsoc doors will open at 10 a.m. for the weekly games day.

Photo exhibit
To mark the 21st anniversary of the deadly pipeline explosions that ripped up eight miles of city streets in Guadalajara on April 22, 1992, the Ex Convento del Carmen (Avenida Juarez 638) is hosting an exhibition by local photographers Jose Hernandez Claire and Jose Muñiz. The exhibition, which opened Monday, features 20 black and white images of not only the pain and suffering caused by the blasts, but also the solidarity that they inspired as the authorities and civil society united to help rescue the victims.
Container art
The “Art in a Container” exhibition under the iconic Juan Matute Remus suspension bridge on Lazaro Cardenas and Lopez Mateos opens on Saturday, April 27, 8 p.m. Eleven artists from Guadalajara were invited to take part in the project to decorate rectangular shipping containers. Among the most notable participants is Taufic Gashaan, a local architect who runs a successful business using the containers to build unique houses and apartments
Boy Scouts
Guadalajara resident John Okyhusen is looking for people who participated in or remember anything about the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Troop Number One of Guadalajara, which disbanded sometime in the 1990s.
The troop was formed in 1965 – one of three BSA troops founded in Mexico. Growing up in Guadalajara, Okyhusen says he was a member of the troops from 1986 to 1990, under scoutmaster Jack O’Brien, who later moved back to the United States.
Okyhusen is hoping to write up an historical account of BSA activity in Mexico, for future publication, possible in Boys Life Magazine.
