Find crafts, gifts at Tlaqueparte
TlaquepArte, the excellent biannual exhibition of handicrafts, gifts and decorations, runs this weekend at Expo Guadalajara, and also though Monday, May 16.
The event offers great opportunities for gift-buying, with a diverse range of items from Mexico and across Latin America. Sellers hawk jewelry, ceramics, lacquered boxes, Mexican silver, mirrors, furniture, belts, wallets, women’s clothing, hammocks, bags, masks, photo frames, religious items and much more.
Also on sale will be those highly popular and collectible alejibres – brightly-colored sculptures of fantastical animal-like creatures, typically carved from the copal tree. The smaller ones start at around 70 pesos.
A major plus of TlaquepArte is that shoppers are able to browse, ask questions and buy directly at cost from any of the 250 artisans at the event. Held twice a year, the fair is popular among retailers and visitors alike. Wholesalers are especially attracted to the four-day event, while even the most frugal of spenders can pick up delightful gifts for less than 50 pesos.
Open Friday, May 13 through Monday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily at Expo Guadalajara (Mariano Otero and Las Rosas, four blocks from Plaza del Sol).
Democrats Abroad to show ‘Trumbo’
A showing of the 2015 biting drama “Trumbo,” about a Hollywood screenwriter blacklisted in 1947, is offered this weekend by Democrats Abroad in Guadalajara, along with a brief, informal workshop for those applying for absentee ballots for the November U.S. election.
“Please bring along friends, family, and anyone who may be interested in Democrats Abroad,” says organizer Jude Wallesen.
“Trumbo” will show Sunday, May 15, 2 p.m. in the homelike setting of the American Society. Those attending are asked to bring a luncheon dish to share, as well as a serving utensil and their own beverage. Paper plates, etc. will be provided.
A donation of 20 pesos will be requested to help with room rental. Wallesen also asks that those who plan to attend send an RSVP to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if possible.
The American Society is at Avenida San Francisco 3332 between Juan Bernardino and Federico Javier Clavijero, in Colonia Chapalita, about five blocks west of glorieta “Estampida.”
The vinyl revival continues
Everyone loves good comeback story and the LP (long playing), or 33 1⁄3 rpm microgroove vinyl record, has been one of the best in recent years.
Lovers of LPs might wish to make a bee line for the city center this weekend for Vinyl Mania, a festival that cashes in on this revival trend.
Fans of “oldie” material should be warned that much of this festival – now in its third year – is mainly geared to a younger generation, although one should expect to find a good number of classics/vintage among the LPs and items on sale.
The festival features equipment displays, memorabilia, music, deejays, art and photo exhibits, film showings, auctions and other surprises. LPs can also be sold or interchanged at the festival.
The festival takes place at the LARVA cultural center (Av. Juarez 451, corner of Ocampo) and runs Saturday, May 14 and Sunday, May 15, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day. Free entry.
