Let’s end wolf whistling
Verbal harassment of women on the street, including whistling, honking or making kissing noises, is now treated as a public-order offense under city ordinances approved by Guadalajara city hall.
Studies show that 70 percent of young women have received inappropriate remarks or gestures while walking in the Guadalajara city center. Transgressors face up to 36 hours in jail or a fine of up to 4,000 pesos. Construction firms have been briefed to educate their employees on correct behavior, while municipal police officers are given special training on what constitutes verbal harassment.
Bodies wash up in Lake Chapala
At least nine bodies have washed up this week at the mouth of the Lerma River where it flows into Lake Chapala near the town of Jamay, in Michoacan. The bodies of eight men and one woman are severely mutilated and identification will take a long time, Jalisco Attorney General Eduardo Almaguer told reporters Thursday. Almaguer said his agency had not received any reports of missing persons from lakeshore towns and communities in Jalisco.
Croc kills fisherman
A man has died after being attacked by a crocodile in the Jalisco municipality of Tomatlan. Jesus Magaña, 78, died while fishing in the company of his son in a small boat on Laguna Paraman. Local reports say Magaña fell overboard and was immediately savaged by the crocodile.
Massive PV beach cleanup
Around 300 volunteers marked International Coastal Cleanup Day 2016 by clearing a massive two tons of trash from Puerto Vallarta’s beaches September 17. The city government supplied the cleanup essentials, such as bags and gloves. Volunteers stretched out from Boca de Tomatlán all the way to Boca de Tomates.
Wagner sings Wagner
U.S. soprano Amber Wagner has wrapped up her recording of arias, preludes and overtures with the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra. After post-production work, the CD is expected to be released along with another recording by the state orchestra commemorating the 175th anniversary of the birth of Tchaikovsky.
