Red Cross collection gets underway

Chapala firm Productos Sane (manufacturers of salsas picantes and sangrita) has kicked off the annual Cruz Roja (Red Cross) “collecta” (collection) with the donation of a much-needed new transformer.

“We currently share transmission lines and a single transformer with all the restaurants on the malecon in Chapala,” said Norm Pifer, vice president of the Cruz Roja council. “This means the power drain, especially on weekends, often precludes full use of our x-ray machine.”

Several events have been planned during this year’s collection between  March 14 and April 17.

February’s comida with the five municipal mayors in the Chapala coverage area will be followed with one-on-one visits to receive cash and in-kind donations. Other visits to various Mexican banks, schools and businesses in the area are also scheduled.

According to Pifer, the Carlos Slim Foundation (Telmex) will again offer matching funds via telephone contributions. Last year 98,000 pesos was donated through Telmex. Privately funded advertising will appear in this paper and the Mexican press with precise instructions on how to donate.

Retired and current Red Cross employees and student volunteers will also participate, going door to door and at various locations throughout the area.

The Cruz Roja council wants to thank everyone in advance for their participation and remind them that ONLY those solicitors with the white plastic containers bearing a big red cross are authorized to receive money for the Cruz Roja.
