Dog agility match comes to Lakeside

Lakeside is soon to be host to some friendly, furry competition. Three dog agility clubs will participate in a non-qualifying competition Sunday, December 1, at the Free Spirit Playpark located at Ramon Corona 166 in San Antonio Tlayacapan, next to the soccer field.

They are ClickerPets Agility Club from Zapopan, Patitas de Ayuda Agility Club from Ameca and Velocidad Canina from Aguascalientes.

Competitors on December 1 will use the occasion to familiarize young dogs to the noise, distraction and activities they will encounter at a qualifying event.  They may either be “on leash” or “off leash” for the rounds.

Agility competitions contain Starter, Advance and Masters levels that dogs must work through.
Dogs are entered by height, measured at the shoulder. The five heights are: 8”, 12”,16”, 24” and 26”.

In qualifying competition, the runs are called Jumpers, Standard, Steeplechase and Grand Prix.  In the December 1 match, some additional games have been added to the scenario just for fun and excitement.

Agility provides mental and physical stimulation for a dog, as well as for the handler.

The benefits are improved coordination, balance and memory. It also teaches dog obedience and strengthens the bond between dog and handler.

For the older person, agility can be done at the physical level and speed that he or she decides is right for them.

Dog registration is at 9 a.m. The cost is 100 pesos a dog (includes barbecue) and 50 pesos per run. The competition starts at 10 a.m. General public admission is 20 pesos. Food and drink will be available for purchase. Bring a hat and chair if you can, but leave pets at home if they aren’t competing.
