Lakeside Democrats Abroad gather for Independence Day

The Chapala chapter of Democrats Abroad threw its customary Independence Day Picnic on Tuesday, July 4, with a full house gathered on the shady terrace of the Hotel Montecarlo.

Guests of honor, Chapala Mayor Javier Degollado, and his wife Elizabeth Guzman, rubbed elbows with around 175 lakeside Democrats in attendance. Addressing the crowd, the mayor expressed his gratitude to the Americans and other foreign nationals who have chosen to make their home in the Chapala area.

Event chair Ilona Deberhegyi stressed that fostering friendly and productive relations between Mexico and the United States is now a core mission of Democrats Abroad Chapala.

Despite concerns over troubling shifts in government policies since the inauguration of President Donald, the Dems cheerfully celebrated the Fourth with a classic feast and dance party in an ambiance of camaraderie.

Starring in the buffet spread of typical holiday fare were charcoal grilled hamburgers and king-size hot dogs with all the fixings, complemented by a variety of salads and fresh fruits. Frosty margaritas were big sellers at the no-host bar.

Live musical entertainment was provided by the talented sax and voice duo Mike Leisenbach and Karen and the Noe Raygoza band.
