Open dog house
Everyone is invited to attend an open house on Sunday March 24, 1-3 p.m. at the Lucky Dog Rescue and Adoption Center.
Aside from touring the new shelter and meeting the canine stars, expect fun doggie items for sale, a 50/50 raffle, and of course, hot dogs.
For those who aren’t aware of the new location, Lucky Dog is situated on the road from Chapala’s Cristiania Park to Mezcala, just before Sta. Cruz. It is a perfect rural location for the dogs to exercise, become healthy, nourished, socialized and ready to be a member of a lucky family.
Lucky Dog has an outstanding crew of old and new volunteers, but always needs more.
Adoptions have been brisk, but there are many great dogs and pups who are still hoping to get lucky.
Summer hours beginning March 1 are from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Saturdays, and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. On Sunday.
There is a cell phone at Lucky Dog that will be answered during open hours, provided the volunteers aren’t all busy in the yard with the dogs. The number is 331-300-7144.

Ancestors
A meeting of the Genealogy Forum will take place Monday, March 25, 2 p.m. in the Sala at the Lake Chapala Society.
This month’s meeting will be about finding the final resting spots of dead ancestors, as well as finding their obituaries. Members will be talking about this in the context of breaking down the so-called “brick walls.”
“Find a Grave” has recently added some great new tools and there are several new tombstone information collections they will be reviewing. In addition, the group will discuss where information might be hiding. If you have a brick wall ancestor you’d like help with, they will try some of these new tools.
The forum is open to everyone, whether an old hand at genealogy or someone who has recently decided to trace his or her ancestors.

LCS bus trip
The Lake Chapala Society (LCS) is off to the Galerias mall in Guadalajara on Wednesday, April 3.
The bus leaves from the sculpture at La Floresta at 9 a.m. and returns at 3:30 p.m. The mall has Liverpool, Sears, Best Buy, Sally’s Beauty, Home Store, Krispy Kreme, Walmart, Sams, Costco, Mega and many more great stores.
The ticket price is 200 pesos. Sign up at the LCS table Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
For Tepehua
American Legion Post Nine is holding a fundraiser for the Tepehua Centro Comunitaio (Tepehua Community Center) on Saturday, April 6, beginning at 1 p.m.
Tickets are 200 pesos and include your choice of chicken or pork dishes, music by DJ Eduardo (for tips), a cash bar, and tours of the facilities.
Meet and talk to the fine people that run this wonderful enterprise. This is a “hand up” as opposed to a “hand out” charity.
Local Tepehua neighborhood men will act as parking attendants and Tepehua neighbohood women will do the cooking and serving.

Signs of the times
Everyone is invited to a free seminar entitled “Hope for Perilous Times,” on Wednesday, March 27, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the home of Mo and Lorene Crous.
Billie Boatwright and Norma Johnson will lead the seminar. They teach internationally, and have visited and taught at Lakeside for more than ten years. Lunch will be provided.

Jewish Congregation
The Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation will include the Passover Yizkor Service at Shabbat worship on Friday, March 29, 6 p.m. at the synagogue. As usual, a pot luck shabbat dinner follows the service.
Yizkor (memorial prayers) is said on Yom Kippur, the eighth day of Sukkot, on the last day of Passover and on the second day of Shavout. The Congregation decided to include these special prayers this Friday, after verifying that it is permissible according to religious practice, since much of the community may not be able to attend a separate Yizkor service, which would have been scheduled for Tuesday, April 2.
A memorial service, called Yizkor (meaning “remember”), is recited as part of the prayer service four times during the year. This is based on the Jewish belief in the eternity of the soul. Although a soul can no longer do good deeds after death, it can gain merit through the charity and good deeds of the living.

St. Andrew’s Anglican
The Sunday of the Passion, also known as Palm Sunday, begins the most solemn week in the Christian calendar. At St. Andrew’s the normal two services are combined into a single Sunday, March 23, 10 a.m. service that begins outside at the Columbarium Altar in the garden. The congregation remembers Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem on the first Palm Sunday, then the clergy, choir and congregation process into the Church, to begin walking the Way of the Cross. Luke’s story of Jesus’ arrest, suffering and death is read dramatically by individual parishioners. Fr. Winston Welty’s says his sermon, “Words TO the Cross,” focuses not on the traditional “Seven Last Words” spoken by Jesus from the Cross, but on “words spoken to Him as He died, words that mirror our own responses to Him.”
Then on Maundy Thursday at 5 p.m., the St. Andrew’s congregation gathers to remember Jesus’ institution of the Lord’s Supper. The rector’s sermon is entitled “Good News, Bad News, Good News.”
The next afternoon, on Good Friday, starting at 3 p.m. we stand watch at the foot of the Cross. The sermon, “Truth to Tell,” reflects on Jesus’ death and all the ways in which the Cross is a mirror of ourselves. The St. Andrew’s choir will lead our music at all of the services of Holy Week.

Unitarians
The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meets each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Sta. Margarita 113 (southwest corner of Santa Clara and Sta. Margarita) in Riberas del Pilar. Center for Spiritual Healing
The center holds services every Friday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Nicolas Bravo 17 in Ajijic. The topic for the service on March 29 is “What’s Good about Good Friday?” by Rev. Tim Schubert.

Lakeside Presbyterian Church meets each Sunday at 10 a.m. Sunday, March 24 (Palm Sunday), Pastor Ross Arnold’s sermon will be “Whom do you Choose?” (Mark 15:6-15).
There will be a special Maundy Thursday service on March 28, 5 p.m. and a Good Friday service on March 29, 5 p.m. All are welcome.
Little Chapel by the Lake
The Little Chapel by the Lake will be holding its regular service at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, March 24. The emphasis will be on Palm Sunday with Rev. Gene Raymer delivering a message “They Didn’t Understand.” A fellowship luncheon will follow. During the remainder of the week, they will join with the Christ Church Anglican congregation in their observance of Holy Week.
Christ Church Anglican
Christ Church Anglican Fellowship will begin Holy Week on Palm Sunday, March 24, 9 a.m., with the Liturgy of the Palms, including the blessing of the palm and a procession with the palms. This will be followed by the Holy Eucharist, Rite II. The Passion of Jesus according to Luke will be read by the congregation in various roles during the Liturgy of the Word. Fr. Danny Borkowski’s sermon topic is “Ride On, Ride On, in Majesty,” based on Luke 19:29-40.
March 28, Maundy Thursday, 4:30 p.m., Christ Church will commemorate the Last Supper of Jesus and his disciples with the Holy Eucharist, Rite II, including the traditional ceremony of foot washing, keeping in mind the commandment of Jesus to his disciples to love each other as he has loved them.
The next day, Good Friday, Christ Church will remember the Passion and death of Jesus with a service at noon. This service will include the “solemn collects,” the congregational reading of the Passion of Jesus according to John, and the reverencing of the cross.
The congregations of Christ Church and the Little Chapel will have a joint fellowship between their two services on Palm Sunday, as usual.
Jehovah’s Witnesses
Everyone is invited to a special service and seminar examining the words of the Bible about the death and resurrection of Christ at Salon del Reino de los Testigos de Jehova (Kingdom Hall) at Santa Margarita 18 in Riberas del Pilar at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26. Also come and hear the conference entitled “Is death the end of everything?” on Sunday, April 7, 10 a.m. at Kingdom Hall in Riberas del Pilar.
San Andres Catholic Church
Palm Sunday, March 24, will be observed three ways. First, the Blessing of the Palms, 7:15 p.m. at Seis Esquinas in Ajijic. Second with the procession in honor of Christ down Calle Hidalgo from Seis Esquinas to the San Andres Church (Parroquia and Marcos Castellanos) for the third: A celebration of the Eucharist on the esplanade of the Church at 8 p.m.
Holy Thursday, March 28, morning prayers are at 8 a.m. and evening Mass will be offered in the Church atrium and the holy oils, recently blessed in Guadalajara will be received during the Eucharist.
Good Friday, March 29, morning prayers begin at 8 a.m. The re-enactment of the Passion of Christ begins at 10 a.m. The Seven Words of Christ begin at 2 p.m. and the Stations of the Cross (in English) begin at 3 p.m. in the chapel next to the Ajijic Cultural Center on the plaza. The March of Silence, where large numbers of parishioners walk in total silence from the church, west on Constitucion/Ocampo to the Ajijic cemetery, begins at 9 p.m.
