Halloween ‘Karaoke’

Karaoke buffs can give their Halloween costumes a trial run at American Legion Post Seven in Chapala on Friday, October 30, from 2-4 p.m.

It’s no trick, all singers at the event will receive a Halloween surprise. Organizers warn others, “Beware!”

Lucky Dog Delay

The Third Annual Lucky Dog Open House was bumped from the calendar last weekend by sloppy conditions created by Hurricane Patricia. The dogs are now ready to welcome visitors on Sunday, November 1, from 1-5 p.m. The pups will direct guests to view the extensive renovations that were recently completed at the local rescue and adoption shelter just east of Chapala.

Lucky Dog volunteers will be at the barbeque, grilling burgers and manning the no-host bar. A selection of dog toys and sweaters are on display and the afternoon is studded with special events.

Open Circle

Tracy Barnett, Abuela Esperanza (Grandmother Hope), and Raquel Lucas are slated to appear at Open Circle on Sunday, November 1, 10:30 a.m., to explain The Vision Council, Guardians of the Earth.

The network-building effort to connect people, organizations and projects that hold a similar focus on holistic health, sustainability and creative approaches to the problems confronting society was founded 25 years ago by an international group of kindred spirits – artists, educators, performers and activists who dreamed of creating a better world.

Members of the group travel the world putting on performances, holding educational evenings. Nearly 34 years ago early Guardians created Mexico’s first ecovillage, Huehuecoyotl, in Tepoztlan, Morelos, about an hour south of Mexico City.

After 25 years as an activist, journalist and photographer, an organizer of the XIV Vision Council-Earth Guardians gathering, Tracy L. Barnett continues working as a freelance writer while living in Jalisco’s Teopantli Kalpulli.

Abuela Esperanza Moran (Grandmother Hope) is one of the original inhabitants of Teopantli Kalpulli. For 30 years she studied different spiritual traditions while traveling extensively throughout the continent, meeting with tribal elders. A founder of the Universal School of Love, she is a promoter of women’s circles and elders’ councils including the Council of Grandmothers.

Raquel De Lucas came to Mexico from her native Spain more than 20 years ago and found her path in the study of native traditions beginning with Chief Nanita, the first woman general for the Mexica (Aztec). She was involved with the Vision Council at its inception, and part of the Rainbow Caravan’s 13-year sojourn through Latin America at the very beginning.

Open Circle is held at the Lake Chaala Society.

Bravo to the creepy covey of 61 zombies who arose from death to enthrall a huge crowd of on-lookers at the October 24 Thrill the World dance performance held at the Ajijic plaza as an annual fund-raiser for Cruz Roja Chapala. The gruesome group hoofed through the standard steps of the Michael Jackson’s ever-popular “Thriller,” segueing into the more recent Bruno Mars billboard hit “UpTown Funk.” Final accounting is still underway, but proceeds from sponsorships and donations are expected to total more than 180,000 pesos. Extra money will come in from the screening of “Thriller in Ajijic, the locally produced tongue-in-cheek “mocu-mentary” scheduled for Saturday, October 31, 4 p.m., at Cinemas del Lago. Admission 75 pesos.
