British Luncheon
The Lakeside British and Commonwealth Society holds its monthly luncheon on Saturday, October 5, 12:45 p.m. at Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 57 in Ajijic. Gary Fish will speak on “Grieving.”
Menu is a small salad, lentil soup, roast pork tenderloin, mashed potatoes, vegetables and gravy, spinach lasagna or a large salad with protein. Dessert shortcake with strawberries and ice-cream. The cost is 180 pesos plus drinks and tip.

Ecology & recycling party
The Committee for Recycling of Ajijic, in cooperation with the Lake Chapala Society, will hold an event at LCS, Saturday, October 5, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Learn how recycling will benefit the local community.
Keynote speakers will be Aranzazú Arámbula and Dominique Melhado Basurto from Comunidad de Enlace Ambiental, who will discuss “Climate Reality.” Their talk, to be delivered sequentially in Spanish and English, will explore threats to the environment attributed to climate change.
Early bird guests will be welcomed with free coffee, donuts and croissants available until 10:30 a.m., when Chapala Mayor Moisés Anaya is expected to deliver the Fiesta’s opening remarks.
The silent auction will be open from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Live auctions, offering a broad array of merchandise, gourmet offerings and unique experience opportunities, will start at 1:30 p.m. and again at 3:30 p.m.
There will be refreshments, drinks, live music and food. Entry fee: one piece of recycling material.
Tarahumara
A day of food and fun is slated for Sunday, October 6 at La Bodega, starting at 1 p.m. and continuing into the evening.
Proceeds will help replace the cash, school supplies and warm blankets and clothing earmarked for the free Tarahumara children’s hospital and school in the Copper Canyon, which were stolen in two robberies at the house of the Tarahumara Project founder Elizabeth Townsend earlier this month.
The Tarahumara Project has been working with the Free Tarahumara Children’s Hospital since 2006 and the school since 2008. The hospital sees an average of 6,500 patients a year. The school teaches the indigenous children in their own language first, and then Spanish, to be proud of who they are, and where they come from.
At the event, the special is grilled hamburgers and the a la carte menu will also be available. La Bodega will donate proceeds from the sale of food and drink. Tarahumara handicrafts will be for sale, as well as clothing made by Townsend, original jewelry and artwork. A a 50/50 drawing will be held. All donations of cash or kind will get a chance to win a piece of art or jewelry.
All proceeds and donations will go to the hospital.
Open Circle
Dr. Beatriz Gallagher will present “Your Immune System and the Battles Within You” at the next meeting of Open Circle, Sunday, October 6, 10:30 a.m. to noon, on the patio of the Lake Chapala Society (LCS).
Essential for your survival, the immune system can distinguish between self and non-self, friend or foe, and its powerful chemicals can destroy sick cells and pathogens. It is a complex system always at work, but it can also turn against you and attack healthy tissues by mistaken identity. It can be overactive and cause allergies or become weak and then you get sick. Gallagher will tell you what compromises its integrity and how to feed it properly to keep it humming.
Gallagher obtained a bachelor’s degree in Science and Biochemistry and a master’s degree in Human Nutrition. She also holds a diplomate in Chinese Medicine and a PhD in Integrative Medicine and Clinical Nutrition. Other training includes Biochemistry of Addictions, Nutrigenomics, and Genetic Testing. She moved to the Chapala area in 2010 and has since maintained a private practice here.

TED Talks
Biologist and Geneticist Jennifer Doudna presents “How CRISPR Lets Us Edit our DNA” at the next Ted Talk, Tuesday, October 8, noon to 1:15 p.m. in the Lake Chapala Society Sala. Open to LCS members only.
Doudna co-invented a groundbreaking new technology for editing genes, called CRISPR-Cas9. The tool allows scientists to make precise edits to DNA strands, which could lead to treatments for genetic diseases ... but could also be used to create so-called “designer babies.” Doudna reviews how CRISPR-Cas9 works -- and asks the scientific community to pause and discuss the ethics of this new tool.

Open to all current LCS members, this class is designed for individuals without any Spanish language background. Classes begin Tuesday, October 8, noon to 1:30 p.m. for three Tuesdays. Register and pay online or register and pay in the LCS service office.
Singalong
Join the Lakeside Singers Wednesday, October 9, 4:30 p.m. as they perform for the residents at O’Hana’s assisted living facility, Calle La Paz 6, in San Juan Cosala. After the performance, the singers will dine at Viva Mexico restaurant, on Calle Porfirio Diaz.
LCS bus trips
The Lake Chapala Society takes a bus trip to the Guadalajara Zoo Thursday, October 10.
On October 17, LCS heads to Costco and Home Depot. November 1, experience the Day of the Dead festival in Tlaquepaque including a guided tour.

Dog-gone event
The Ranch no-kill dog home is holding a fundraiser at Adelitas Bar and Grill in San Antonio Tlayacapan, Thursday, October 17, 5 p.m. A cover charge of 100 pesos includes music, a 50/50 raffle, a sales table and a live auction. Donations of old towels, collars and leashes are needed.
Adelitas will offer special prices on four special meals at this event. Reservations: 376-766-0097.
Yappy Hour
The third annual Yappy Hour, a fundraiser for Tails of Mexico, will also be held Thursday, October 17, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Janelle’s Garden Restaurant in West Ajijic. Enjoy an appetizer buffet, live music, silent auction and cash bar. This event supports spay-and-neuter program and Bone Voyage, a program to ship local dogs to loving homes north-of-the-border. Red Cross needs help
If you are looking for a meaningful way to serve the expat and Mexican population, volunteer for the Red Cross (Cruz Roja), which provides healthcare at its Chapala clinic, rescue services for hikers in the mountains, and ambulance service to the entire Lakeside community. Currently Cruz Roja needs help with staffing its table at the Lake Chapala Society on Tuesday and Friday mornings, 10 a.m. to noon. The position includes taking donations, selling tickets for fund raisers, helping people sign up for events and workshops, and selling small items. You can work regularly, occasionally, or as an on-call substitute.
The organization also needs volunteers for fundraising events, including the November Golf Classic and the February Chili Cookoff; and help is needed at the medical information kit workshops. To volunteer, stop by the Cruz Roja table at the Lake Chapala Society, Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Breast cancer run-walk
It’s that time of year again! Lend your support to a much needed fundraiser supporting women with low incomes in the fight against breast cancer.
Rotary Club of Ajijic will be holding its 3rd annual 5k to De-Feet Breast Cancer. Proceeds will go to Salvati Guadalajara.
Organizers are planning for at least 500 participants this year. The run/walk takes place Sunday October 27, 8-11 a.m., starting at the Ajijic Plaza.

The show will be held at the beautiful Original Hacienda del Lago on O’Campo and Privada de O’Campo in Ajijic.
Some of the Guild’s beautiful arrangements will be for sale at the show.
The proceeds from the show will go toward the Guild’s 2020 Community Project. The 2019 project was building the new foot bridges on the Ajijic Malecon.
Insight Meditation
The Heart of Awareness (HOA) meditation center offers meditation sessions Sunday at 9 a.m., Wednesday at 4 p.m. and Thursday at 11 a.m. All are open to the general public regardless of experience or affiliation.
Wednesday, October 9, the meditation period will be followed by a reading from “Insight Meditation: The Practice of Freedom” by Joseph Goldstein. This week we consider a topic from the section “What is the path?” titled “Fear of enlightenment.”

Inspirational festival rescheduled
Due to concerns over the current wet climate and large quantities of lirio (water hyacinth) clogging the lake, the Water, Light and Hope (Agua Luz y Esperanza) inspirational festival scheduled for Saturday, October 5 at Chapala’s Cristiania Park has been rescheduled for Saturday November 30, 2 p.m.
The highlight of the event was to have been a mass after-dark release of floating lanterns in Lake Chapala’s waters.
