Open Circle

Alicia Knox presents “Why Our Stories Matter” at the next meeting of Open Circle at the Lake Chapala Society, on Sunday, December 1, 10:30 a.m.

There’s power in documenting life through visual images and the written word. Interweaving photographs and stories, Knox will offer a multimedia presentation of Guatemala, the Project Somos Children’s Learning Village, and beyond. She will talk about the importance of documenting our lives and why it is key to get your stories written down and your photographs printed, particularly in this digital age. Her presentation will remind and reignite the importance of gathering and safeguarding precious stories of your precious life.

Knox is the co-founder of the Project Somos Learning Village in Guatemala. She has over 30 years of working in the non-profit sector. Her work has included involvement in international, arts and educational organizations.

She has worked with children with special needs, rescued dogs, designed farm to table educational programming, recruited and managed volunteers and provided courses and training.

Stewardship in action

FoodBank Lakeside helps some truly needy 155 families in San Juan Cosala receive economical nutritionally valuable foods that have a good shelf life. All the folks who work with the organization are volunteers.

Ninety five percent of contributions to FoodBank Lakeside are delivered directly to those who suffer food insecurity. To find out more and/or donate, see foodbanklakeside.org.

LCS to the Zoo

The Lake Chapala Society will head to the Guadalajara Zoo, Tuesday, December 3, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Meet at, and return to the La Floresta sculpture on the Carretera. Dinner for kids

Ajijic Tango is holding a fundraising traditional Christmas dinner for three children’s homes, Tuesday, December 3, 9 p.m. Morelos 19; 650 pesos per person. 100 percent of the ticket price goes to the children’s homes.

Tequila tour

Tequila Reserva de los Gonzales in Atontonilco El Alto is a family owned hacienda in the Jalisco highlands. A tour to this impressive luxurious tequila distillery will be leaving Ajijic Thursday, December 5. 9:30 a.m. and returning to at about 5:30 p.m. Reservations can still be made, if you call now!

The 2,750-peso price includes transportation in a 19-person luxury van, an in-depth tour of the working facilities, lunch, tequila tasting and refreshments.

Your participation will support and benefit the young women who study at Jaltepec Hotel and Hospitality University.

Bingo

Weekly bingo games begin Friday, December 20, 1 to 3 p.m. at Fonda Doña Lola on the carretera in West Ajijic.

The games support eight local charities and non-profits, including the Chapala Food Bank, Love in Action girls home, Santa Clara de Assisi, Donkey Day Care, Have Hammer Carpentry School, Niños de Chapala and Ajijic, Mama Cleo’s Boys and Casa de Tesoros.

The first card is 250 pesos, the second card 150 pesos and the third card is 100 pesos. Winners get to pick from the prize table.

The Bingo game held each Wednesday, 1 to 3 p.m. at El Sombrero Restaurant in Ajijic continues. That game supports Have Hammers.

Making a difference

The Rotary Club of Ajijic is currently sponsoring seven projects. They include menstrual health education workshops at Lakeside, scholarships for 22 Chapala high school students, fundraising for an expanded refrigeration system for Operation Feed, a diabetes care and management program, support for a renal transplant patient, yearly financial support to the Rotary Foundation for Polio Eradication and educational support for an impoverished native American community in Arizona.

Music Poker

American Legion Post Seven holds a fun Music Poker event each Monday at 1 p.m.

The game begins with a dash of music trivia, a healthy portion of Name That Tune, equal amounts of poker and bingo, a sing-a-long, or even dance if you dare.

No poker skills required. Cost: 20 pesos per play card, three games per card.

Pickleball

Ten pickleball courts and four clay tennis courts are open to the public at the Raquet Club in San Juan Cosala with day passes and punch cards available for both sports at the Raquet Club office. There is also a bar and restaurant at the site.
