Mexico’s holiday beer

Symbols such as Christmas trees and Old Saint Nick are universally known in Guadalajara as the harbingers of the holiday season. But there’s another sign that Christmas is just around the corner: Noche Buena beer.

Characterized by its dark color and rich appleish flavor, the highly sought-after blend is only offered from October to December.

Originating in Orizaba, Veracruz in 1924, a German brewer developed this special “edition” to give to his friends for Christmas. It wasn’t until 1938 that it was commercialized for public sale under the name Noche Buena.

Known by the signature label graced with a poinsettia and a higher-end price tag, Noche Buena continues to be a staple at Christmas Eve dinners and fiestas for Tapatios.
