For those who believe in magic, this is a 100-percent true story of real magic in Ajijic, the magic town by the magic lake in Magic Mexico. I often hear the phrase, “Only in Mexico,” and it’s true.
I am an old Englishman, lost in Mexico and marveling at its wonders in a tiny lakeside town called Ajijic, in the state of Jalisco. The Mexican government has designated this town as a ‘Magic Town.’ I can personally confirm that there is indeed magic here, because I have witnessed it every day.
This magical phenomenon takes place daily, in the most unexpected of places—a quaint little butcher’s shop located right at the heart of the town, at the entrance to the magic plaza.
A handwritten cardboard sign on the door asks customers to please close the door behind them. The shop serves two types of customers. The first group consists of people with money to spend. They walk to the door, read the sign, and enter. Inside, they’re greeted by the friendly butcher or one of his two assistants. The meat, I’m told, is of the highest quality, and people come from surrounding areas just to buy it. It’s a bustling place, with a steady stream of clients opening and closing the front door to this old-world, almost Harry Potter-like shop.
