Every December 12, millions of Mexicans pay homage to the Virgin of Guadalupe, revered as the patroness of Mexico and a symbol of national identity. Her image stands as one of the most potent symbols of faith, hope and national pride.
A lesser-known fact is that earlier this century, this iconic image briefly ceased to be the property of Mexico when it was registered with the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) by a foreign businessman for a mere $US150.
