The murders of 22-year-old medical student Karla Margarita Pérez Jiménez in Guadalajara, and a Spanish exchange student in Morelos, have ignited a wave of protests, highlighting Mexico’s deepening crisis of violence against women.
Pérez, a sixth-semester medical student from Irapuato, Guanajuato, who was studying at the city’s Cuauhtémoc University, was reported missing on September 15 after last being seen in the Prados Vallarta neighborhood in Zapopan. According to reports, she was completing her internship at the Hospital General de Zapopan, commonly known as “El Hospitalito.”
Her body was discovered two days later in a field in the Las Agujas neighborhood, near the Camino a Nextipac, and close to the University of Guadalajara’s CUCBA campus (Biological and Agricultural Sciences). She was wearing her medical uniform, reports said. Authorities noted signs of violence, and a charred motorcycle was found at the scene.
