“The Michael Hogan Reader” by Michael Hogan. US$14.95. San Diego: Egret Books.

Guadalajara resident Michael Hogan is a distinguished historian, poet, educator, novelist and international consultant, and the author of 30 books, including a best-selling history of the Irish battalion in Mexico (“The Irish Soldiers of Mexico”), which formed the basis for an MGM movie starring Tom Berenger and two award-winning documentaries. His non-fiction books on Latin America and on teaching overseas have been best sellers both in paperback and on Kindle.
This Reader is a judicious selection of his short stories, poetry, flash fiction, memoir pieces and essays published in books, periodicals and anthologies over the past four decades, and represents the core of Hogan’s literary and philosophical interests and preoccupations. It is often the case that writers are good in one or two genres — as short story writers and novelists, for example, or as poets and playwrights, say — but rare to find a writer equally proficient in them all. The essays in this Reader are among the finest examples of Hogan’s writing.
