Dining Out: Bringing back the golden oldies

Malted milkshakes, root beer floats, cherry cokes, Philly cheese steak, chili dogs. These are the things that make your taste buds salivate over a certain era — when Dwight D. Eisenhower was president and cholesterol wasn’t on the radar.

60s in Paradise not only offers fantastic burgers, hand-battered onion rings, BLTs and the like, they also spin the discs that ruled the 50s and 60s. Tunes from James Brown, Elvis, Little Richard, Pat Boone and Fats Domino are part of the ambiance at this emporium of our youthful culinary binges. And beyond the bread and butter pickles in the relish bar and Heinz, and Del Monte catsups, a realistic look at the baby-boomer clientele has also spawned a menu for diabetics and those on Weight Watchers, Atkins or HCG maintenance. And gluten-free, low carb, low glycemic specialties are also on offer. Owner Lauri Jenson has put in items like: the guiltless Philly, lite Chili in Paradise, and a turkey burger. She offers up five different salads and has diabetic desserts and drinks as well. 60s  in Paradise is also open for breakfast Tuesday to Sunday, 8:30 a.m. and will serve it until they close at 4 p.m . Jensen has plans for a Sunday Brunch sometime in October.

60s in Paradise: Hidalgo 10,  Ajijic  (a 1/2 block from the Plaza). Tel: 376-766-4721, www.60sparadise.com.
