Airfares to Cancun and hotel rates in the Riviera Maya have dropped considerably this summer due to negative publicity, including U.S. State Department travel warnings on the risks of traveling to the area.
A review of Kayak found that four-star hotel prices had shrunk by an average of eight percent and the cost of five-star hotels had gone down 20 percent since 2018. Reservations in general in Cancun are down about 10 percent this summer compared to last year. Fares for flights from Mexico City to Cancun last month dipped 7.7 percent on average compared to last July.
