Rugby takes off in Mexico

The road to the England 2015 Rugby World Cup begins in Mexico City on March 24, with Mexico taking on Jamaica in the first qualifying round.

Mexico is among 80 countries bidding for just eight open berths to the tournament, one of which Argentina has already clinched by reaching the quarter-finals at last year’s World Cup in New Zealand.

Rugby is beginning to gain a local following in Guadalajara thanks to local clubs Rhinos and Lobos who currently sit first and second in the Bajio Occidente league. Both sides play at the 2,500-capacity Estadio Tlaquepaque, which was built for use in the 2011 Pan American Games.

The next home game is a local derby between Rhinos and Lobos on April 14 at 3 p.m. The Estadio Tlaquepaque is at Unidad Valentin Gomez Farias, on Diego Rivera 7 (corner with Pedro Coronel),Tlaquepaque.
