New soccer season underway

Recently rebranded as the Liga MX, Mexico’s biannual soccer league kicked off last weekend.

With local side Estudiantes having been demoted to lower division status last season, Atlas and Chivas are the only two teams representing Guadalajara in the top flight during the Apertura 2012 competition.

Atlas tied 1-1 with Pumas in their opening fixture at the Estadio Jalisco on Saturday. Chivas, who are hoping to improve under new Dutch manager John van’t Schip, following a poor season in the Clausura 2012 tournament, lost 2-1 to Toluca on Sunday.

There are also two local teams playing in Mexico’s second division: Estudiantes, who are affiliated with the Autonomous University (UAG), and rivals Leones Negros from the Univerity of Guadalajara (UdeG).

Upcoming professional soccer games:

- Leones Negros vs. Merida (Estadio Jalisco, Friday, July 27, 8.45 p.m.)

- Chivas vs. Santos Laguna (Estadio Omnilife, Sunday, July 29, 5 p.m.)

- Estudiantes vs. Pumas Morelos (Estadio 3 de Marzo, Friday, August 3, 8 p.m.)

- Atlas vs. Tigres UA Nuevo Leon (Estadio Jalisco, Saturday, August 4, 9 p.m.)
