Local elders bagged a heap of medals at the regional round of DIF Jalisco’s Seniors Sports and Culture Games held Tuesday, October 22 at Chapala’s Parque La Cristiania.
More than 600 seniors representing the municipalities of Atotonilco el Alto, Ayotlan, Chapala, Degollado, Jamay, Jocotepec, Ocotlan, Poncitlan, Tizapan and Tuxcueca competed in the athletic contests in field and track, Newcomb volleyball and coordinated group rhythmic routines and the artistic disciplines of folk dancing, choral singing and choral readings.
Chapala’s Jose Trinidad Ramirez Amezcua turned into the star of the day, walking away as the triple gold medal winner in the 100, 200 and 400-meter men’s foot races. The municipality’s male and female cachibol (Newcomb ball) teams both earned top honors in their sport.Grupo Guadalupano from Chapala placed behind competitors from Jamay to earn silver medals in the regional dance contest. The Coro Nuevo Sol from Santa Cruz de la Soledad took third place in choral singing.
Jocotepec’s rhythmic exercise team Nuevo Amanecer won gold for their community.
All gold medalists earned a pass to compete in the state championship.
