After a stand-out debut season in 2014, the Charros de Jalisco are in danger of missing out on the Mexican Pacific League (LMP) baseball playoffs, which begin in January.
A 6-4 loss to Ciudad Obregon Tuesday evening in the second of a three-game series in Zapopan means the Charros will need a miracle to qualify for the post-season party.
Even a clean sweep in the regular season ending series in Mazatlan from December 27 to 29 might not be enough for the Guadalajara-based team.
The Charros finished the Primera Vuelta (First Half) of the regular season in a respectable fourth place in the eight-team league, with an 18-17 record, four games back of leaders Mexicali. But the Charros’ form dipped dramatically in the second half of the season (Segunda Vuelta), and on Wednesday, December 22 they were propping up the league table in eighth place, with a dismal 11-18 record.
Although little has gone right on the field this winter, fans are still flocking to the Telmex stadium in Zapopan for home games. Attendances have hovered around the 8,000-9,000 mark, and the club shop always does a brisk trade on game days.
