Guadalajara-born Carlos Ortiz, 29, became the first Mexican golfer to win a PGA Tour event for 42 years, after shooting a final round of 65 to beat a top-class field at the Houston Open last weekend.
This was Ortiz’s 118th PGA event and first triumph.
The victory qualified the Mexican golfer for next year’s prestigious Masters tournament in Augusta, Georgia. (This year’s tournament started Thursday after being postponed in April due to the pandemic. It concludes on Sunday.)
Ortiz held off a challenge from world No. 1 Dustin Johnson and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama to win his debut PGA title at the Memorial Park Golf Course. The Tapatio was unable to hold back tears after he finished with a birdie on the 18th. “It was really hard to hold the emotions all the way to the end, but I’m really happy the way it played out and the way I played, too,” he said in a post-tournament interview.
