A stunning second-half comeback by Tigres broke the hearts of thousands of Chivas fans last Sunday as a dramatic Liga Mx soccer final played out at Guadalajara’s Akron Stadium.
The party atmosphere that greeted the players as they entered the field—light show, fireworks, huge banners, waving flags, anthems—intensified in the ninth minute of the game when Chivas’s Roberto Alvarez hammered a low shot past Tigres goalie Nahuel Guzmán to open the scoring. The euphoria cranked up further in the 20th minute when Victor Guzman hit a powerful first-time volley from a corner to give Chivas a 2-0 lead.
The first leg of the final played at Tigres Stadium in Monterey on May 25 had ended in a dull 0-0 tie. Sunday’s enthralling second leg was the exact opposite.
With their team leading 2-0 at half-time, many Chivas fans were already planning their championship celebrations. Some headed to the Minerva Glorieta in anticipation of the customary victory party, while others stayed put at the big screens set up in plazas around the metropolitan area—also in Chapala, where around 1,800 people reportedly viewed the game—to watch the conclusion of the match and the presumed coronation.
