Canelo confirms next fight in September

After thrilling fans with a hometown fight on the Cinco de Mayo weekend, local boxing superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez returns to the ring in a more familiar location, Las Vegas, in September, to take on U.S. middleweight Jermell Charlo.

Charlo is a 33-year-old who has held world championships in two weight classes, and was ranked the world’s second-best active middleweight and the sixth-best active boxer, pound for pound, by several recognized boxing websites.

Charlo will present a strong test for Canelo, who returned to the ring in the Guadalajara fight in May, when he defeated plucky British challenger John Ryder in 12 rounds. Weight, height and reach-wise the two fighters are well matched, and are the same age, 33, with Charlo older by just two months.

Experience-wise, the two are also evenly matched: Charlo’s record is 35-1-1, with 19 wins via knockout, compared to Canelo’s 59-2-2, with 39 wins via knockout. However, the American fighter may be rusty when he faces Canelo since his last fight was in May 2022.
