No medals but Jalisco athletes make us proud

Although none of the 19 athletes from Jalisco in the 109-strong Mexican delegation won Olympic medals, all performed creditably, with some delivering exceptional performances, noted Carlos González, coordinator at Code Jalisco (State Sports Council), upon their return home.

Diver Alejandra Orozco concluded her cycle of four Olympics—which began with a silver medal in London 2012—by reaching the finals of two events in Paris.

pg3aOther standout performances came from runner Paola Morán, weightlifter Janeth Gómez, cyclist Jessica Salazar, and artistic swimmers Nuria Diosdado and Pamela Toscano. Arantxa Cossío, at just 20 years old, made history as the first Mexican-born athlete to compete in table tennis at the Olympics. Local athletes who appeared in successive Olympics included sailor Elena Oetling from Chapala, pentathlete Mariana Arceo, and Alejandra Zavala in the shooting competition.
