Guadalajara tennis fans will soon experience a new kind of competition that breaks from traditional tennis rules, with matches divided into timed quarters, coaching timeouts, and “bonus” cards.
The Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) league, created in 2020 by Patrick Mouratoglou—former coach to Serena Williams, Grigor Dimitrov and Holger Rune—will hold its first Guadalajara edition from February 13 to 16 at the Pan American Tennis Center. The prize pool will approach US$1.4 million, with the champion taking home US$400,000.
As of press time, organizers had confirmed the participation of several top players in the eight-player field: Norwegian Casper Ruud, Australian Nick Kyrgios, Canadian Denis Shapovalov, and Italian Flavio Cobolli. Past UTS tournaments have included top 20 players such as Taylor Fritz, Andrey Rublev, Frances Tiafoe, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Ben Shelton, Félix Auger-Aliassime and Daniil Medvedev.
