The Charros de Jalisco were crowned Mexican Pacific League (LMP) champions for the third time after defeating the Tomateros de Culiacán in a dramatic extra-inning thriller on Tuesday night.
With the game tied 6-6 after nine innings, the Charros broke through with a three-run rally in the 13th to secure the Fernando Valenzuela Trophy and clinch the best-of-seven series, 4-2.
The Charros had to battle back after falling behind 3-0 in the second inning but surged ahead 6-5 by the sixth. The Tomateros forced extra innings with a game-tying run in the eighth, setting up a tense finish before the Charros sealed the victory on the road.
An emotional crowd of around 20,000 fans filled Estadio Tomateros in Culiacán, many dressed in white as a call for peace in a city that has seen an uptick in violence since last September.
This marks the third LMP title in the 10-year history of the current Charros franchise, adding to their championships in 2018-19 and 2021-22. The franchise has existed in various forms since 1946, spending much of its history in the summer Mexican Baseball League (LMB). The current iteration of the team joined the winter LMP in 2014-15.
