Preparations ramp up for 2026 World Cup

With less than 500 days to go until the 2026 FIFA World Cup—co-hosted by the U.S., Mexico, and Canada—Guadalajara is gearing up to host four first-round matches.

One of the key announcements this week was that Akron Stadium’s turf will be replaced with Mexico’s first-ever hybrid pitch, which combines natural grass with artificial fibers for enhanced durability.

Additionally, due to naming rights restrictions, Akron Stadium will be officially referred to as Guadalajara Stadium for the duration of the tournament. Fans can also look forward to free WiFi throughout the venue.

Outside the stadium, a Fan Fest will be set up in Plaza Liberación in the city center, offering live broadcasts of other tournament matches, food, drinks, and various activities for fans.

Mexico is guaranteed to play one of its first-round matches in Guadalajara, but the remaining fixtures will be determined after the official World Cup draw later this year.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19, with the final set to be played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
