Former Governor follows footsteps of Arrigo Sacchi?

Just over a month after completing his six-year term as governor of Jalisco, Enrique Alfaro Ramírez is as far removed from local politics as one could imagine!

pg6bAlfaro recently shared photos of himself at Feyenoord, the renowned soccer club in Rotterdam, where he is now pursuing his lifelong dream of becoming a professional soccer coach.

The former governor, 51, says he is attending an in-person coaching course at the Dutch club while also taking an online course from the Argentine Football Federation.

During his political career—where he served as mayor of both Tlajomulco and Guadalajara before becoming governor—Alfaro frequently mentioned his aspiration to one day coach his favorite team, Guadalajara’s Chivas.

Whether Chivas fans will ever see him in the dugout at Akron Stadium remains uncertain. Most reports suggest Alfaro was only ever an average amateur player, and while some top-level coaches never played professional soccer, this is relatively uncommon.

Two notable exceptions, however, are Italians Arrigo Sacchi and Maurizio Sarri. Sacchi, regarded as one of the greatest coaches of all time, worked for years as a shoe salesman before leading AC Milan (1987–1991) to legendary status. Similarly, Sarri worked as a banker before transitioning to coaching, eventually managing top clubs like Napoli, Chelsea, and Juventus.

Since finishing his spell as governor in early December 2024, Alfaro, along with his wife Joanna Santillan, has spent most of his time in Europe.
