Rainy season claims its first victim

An 80-year-old man from Tabasco died during the first major storm of the rainy season on Thursday, June 11.

Cristo Nomar Perez Chavarria was one of 60 people injured when awnings collapsed at an outdoor reception held for attendees of an oil sector conference in Guadalajara.  Thirty-six guests were taken to hospital for treatment.  Perez Chavarria died the following day.

Authorities said 67 trees fell in the strong winds, 147 vehicles were  abandoned in rising floodwaters and 63 homes inundated. Water levels in the tunnel by the Millennium Arches rose to 1.80 meters.
