Zapotilllo dam to take pressure off Lake Chapala

With completion of the construction of El Zapotillo dam projected for December of this year, the Guadalajara Metro Area (AMG) will be able to depend upon a vast infrastructure network to satisfy its growing water supply needs.

The new system should take pressure off Lake Chapala as the AMG’s prime water resource, at least in terms of considering any increase in extractions from the country’s largest lake and natural reservoir.

The Zapotillo project, in progress for 15 years, has been a topic of much social and political controversy. The original design called for the flooding the Jalisco highlands towns of Temacapulín, Acasico and Palmarejo, as well as sharing its water resources with the city of León, Guanajuato.
