Zarzuela is a music genre that originated in Spain in the 17th Century that is often compared to traditional opera, but in reality is so much more.
Its passionate, romantic rhythms address the Spanish way of living, love, politics and the human condition. Zarzuela also incorporates the spoken word and dance. The genre is complex and requires focus, talent and hard work to perform beautifully. It is complicated music and requires a very special voice.

World-class tenor Ricardo Calderón is a native of Guadalajara who has worked for over 20 years perfecting and finding the right balance between interpretation and technique. He has studied Zarzuela under some of the best instructors in the world, winning him many international competitions.
Calderón was introduced to Zarzuela in Guadalajara while beginning his university studies. A professor introduced him to the genre, and together they discovered that his tenor voice was perfect for this passionate, emotional type of music.
