The officers, Antonio Osegueda and Felipe Núñez, were fired upon by an occupant of a vehicle they had stopped for a routine revision.

The detained individual, identified only as José Fernando “N”, has a previous criminal record for robbery, drug trafficking and domestic violence, according to a bulletin from the Jalisco Attorney General’s Office (FGE).

Osegueda died at the scene, while Núñez was gravely wounded.  He succumbed in hospital four days later.

Police are still searching for two other occupants of the vehicle, a man and a woman.

If convicted, José Fernando “N” is likely to spend the next 40 years behind bars – the maximum prison term in Jalisco.
