A proposal currently under discussion in the Health Commission of the Jalisco State Congress seeks to impose jail terms on people who flout the state’s no-smoking laws.
The new legislation will eliminate the differentiated areas for smokers inside restaurants, bars and similar establishments. Under the proposal, all smoking spaces will be outdoors, incommunicado from the rest of the establishment and not accesible to children. They must be clearly marked as smoking areas. Fines for establishments that fail to adhere to the new laws could be as high 350,000 pesos. Smokers who break the laws may be jailed for 36-hour periods, as well as face fines.
