Angélica Fregoso, the sole Green Party (PVEM) legislator in the Jalisco Congress, has asked her colleagues to urge the state’s Health Department to work with researchers from the University of Guadalajara (UdeG), trainers and canine associations to acquire dogs of suitable breeds and train them to detect positive Covid-19 cases.
Studies conducted with dogs in various countries, including Finland, France, the United Kingdom and the United States, have shown promising results. The dogs are being trained to detect infected people by sniffing their sweat, Fregoso said. Canines sense of smell is 10,000 times better than humans, scientists say.
