The Wal-Mart Express store on Avenida Mariano Otero has become the first supermarket in the Guadalajara metropolitan area to install self-checkout technology.
Self checkout is common nowadays in many countries but retailers in Mexico have so far been reluctant to install the machines, perhaps out of concerns that they might encourage shoplifting. With self-checkout systems, customers scan item barcodes before paying for their total purchase without needing staff assistance. One main of the aims of the technology is to reduce lines at cashier counters.
