Taekwondo takes center stage in Guadalajara

Guadalajara is preparing to host yet another major international sporting event—and on this occasion a world championships, no less!

pg6The 2022 World Taekwondo Championships, which takes place at the CODE Metropolitan Aquatic Center  November 13 to 20, will bring together the world’s finest exponents of the Korean martial arts form.

In total, 16 gold and silver medals, and 32 bronze medals, will be up for grabs in the different men’s and women’s weight classes.

Held every two years since 1973, the World Taekwondo Championships have previously been held once in Mexico, in Puebla in 2013. Mexico stands in 12th place in the all-time medal table, with four golds, 30 silver and 30 bronze medals.

Taekwondo was introduced as a full medal Olympic sport at the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia.  Mexico has won seven medals since then, including two golds. The country’s most successful Olympic taekwondo athlete is María Espinoza, with one gold, one silver and one bronze medal, in the 2008, 2012 and 2016 games.

South Korea has been the dominate nation at both the World Championships and Olympics.

The opening ceremony for World Taekwondo Championships takes place at the Aquatics center on Sunday, November 13, 7 p.m.  Tickets for all days of competition are available at boletomovil.com, at a cost of 200 to 350 pesos.
