The European Union will bring more than 70 writers to this year’s Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL), when the political bloc of 27 nations will be the guest of honor for the first time.
Following this week’s unveiling of the EU’s program, which takes the theme “Building a Union of Cultures,” University of Guadalajara (UdeG) Rector Ricardo Villanueva said he is certain the 2023 FIL will be the “best ever” in the event’s 37-year history.
Organized by the UdeG, the FIL, the world’s second-largest literary fair, runs from November 25 to December 3 at Expo Guadalajara, and is attended by some 800,000 members of the public over ten days, as well as 30,000 book professionals.
At the announcement of the EU program, Gautier Mignot, the EU’s ambassador to Mexico, said participation in the FIL carries “a deep political significance,” since it seeks to relaunch Europe’s position as “a relevant actor in Latin America.”
