Tortillas wrapped in a message

Tlaquepaque authorities have started a unique campaign to inform women of the resources available to them should they become, or fear they might become, victims of domestic violence.

pg10Some selected tortilla outlets in the municipality are now selling this essential food staple in wrapping paper containing the numbers of both the Tlaquepaque police department (33-3050-3050) and the Gender Violence Unit (33-3600-0899).

So far, 1,000 wrappers have been distributed to local stores in neighborhoods registering the highest incidence of domestic violence.

The aim is to let women know that “violence should not be normalized, and that there is always a place where they can be supported and obtain advice,” said Claudia Araceli Meza Murillo, of the Domestic and Gender Violence Care Unit (Unidad de Atención de la Violencia Intrafamiliar y de Género).

The wrappings promote the Jalisco state government’s Código Violeta (Violet Code) protocol that focuses on reinforcing security for women at risk of gender-based violence through monitoring, follow-up and timely intervention. The protocol was upgraded recently with the launch of a new smartphone app (see below).
