Two women died Wednesday in an unprovoked knife attack by a young man at a private university campus in Guadalajara, the kind of violent incident rarely seen at Mexican educational institutions, although, unfortunately, now somewhat commonplace in the United States.
The victims were secretaries in their 30s who worked in the entrance area of the Technological University of Guadalajara (UTEG) campus at the intersection of Avenida Olímpica and Boulevard Marcelino García Barragán in the Atlas neighborhood of the city.
Around 1 p.m., police started receiving calls about a man rampaging through the campus wielding a knife and randomly attacking people.
After fatally stabbing the two women in the chest and abdomen, and injuring a third person, the assailant ran through the campus threatening others before barricading himself inside a room, using chairs to block the door.
