2004 downtown riotsto be remembered

A commemoration is planned May 28 marking 20 years since anti-globalization protesters clashed with riot police in downtown Guadalajara at the end of the Latin America and Caribbean-European Union Summit.  A 24-hour sit-in will take place Monday, May 27 in the Plaza de Armas, followed the next day by a mock “trial of the repressors” and a “commemorative march in solidarity with the prosecuted.” The riots were among the most violent ever witnessed in Guadalajara, resulting in scores of detentions. Activists claimed that many of those arrested were held incommunicado, tortured and forced to sign false confessions. The state government denied most of the accusations but did not fully investigate them, according to many media outlets reporting at the time.

Chivas lose to America

The Guadalajara Chivas soccer team crashed out of the Liga Mx playoffs, loosing to arch-rivals America 0-1 in the second leg of the semi-final last weekend.  Fans were despondent because America also beat the Chivas earlier this year in the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup.  America plays Mexico City rivals Cruz Azul in the two-leg final on May  23 and 26.
