The second City Market, arguably Guadalajara’s most upscale supermarket brand, has opened its doors in a prime location on Avenida López Mateos, the metropolitan area’s busiest thoroughfare.
The store is situated in the same complex as the city’s first Ikea outlet, which is set to open shortly.
City Market is owned by the La Comer group, which operates 85 stores nationwide under various brands, including La Comer, Fresko, and Su Mesa. The first and only City Market supermarket in Guadalajara opened in Plaza Patria in 2017.
At the launch of the new store on October 29, La Comer Marketing Director Andrés Ehrli noted that the Plaza Patria branch has “gotten better and better as the years have gone by,” emphasizing that the brand has become universally recognized for its “good taste.”
In their immaculately presented stores, City Market offers a selection similar to that of its La Comer and Fresko counterparts but with a broader range of products, including many gourmet items and superior health and beauty options. The new location features a larger bakery area, an improved choice of prepared food items—albeit at higher prices—and an impressive wine selection. Additionally, there are several dining and coffee options, with highlights including breakfast, sushi, seafood, and tapas. The Plaza Patria branch also offers valet parking right outside its entrance.
According to Ehrli, La Comer has invested 459 million pesos (approximately US$22.75 million) in this new venture, which is expected to create 261 new jobs.
While the La Comer group was established nine years ago, its origins trace back 90 years to the opening of the first La Comercial Mexicana outlet in Mexico City. Over the past nine years, La Comer’s workforce has more than doubled, growing from 8,000 to 18,000 employees.
City Market is located at Avenida Lopez Mateos 1192, at the corner of Cubilete, in Colonia Rinconada del Sol.
