Garbage ‘D’ Day for GDL council

December 17 marks a significant day for the Guadalajara City Council, as it officially takes over responsibility for the municipality’s garbage collection and disposal from longtime contractor Caabsa Eagle.

pg5aThe council recently approved the purchase of 160 trucks to handle the estimated 138,000 tons of waste generated annually. Mayor Verónica Delgadillo expects these vehicles to be delivered and operational by December 18, when the new system launches.

Most of Caabsa Eagle’s employees are being rehired by the city, retaining their previous benefits, including health and pension rights.

In recent years, Guadalajara authorities have grown increasingly dissatisfied with Caabsa Eagle’s service, amid rising complaints about uncollected garbage on the streets. The neighboring municipalities of Tonalá and El Salto have also decided to end their contracts with Caabsa Eagle, set to expire next year.
