Activists demand public input on new water pipeline proposal

Members of the Frente de Pueblos de la Ribera del Lago de Chapala (Chapala Lakeshore Peoples’ Front) are once again voicing concerns over the Jalisco government’s plan to construct a new aqueduct to supply water to the Guadalajara metropolitan area from Lake Chapala.

The lake conservation activist group held a press conference on Wednesday, May 21, at the Plaza de Armas in the heart of Guadalajara, urging the government to pause the project until lakeshore residents are allowed to provide input on the scope and implications of building a new aqueduct to replace the existing pipeline, which has been extracting water from the lake since 1989.

Several other pro-environment organizations and water experts supported the call for greater transparency regarding the necessity and elevated costs of the new aqueduct.

The Frente leaders grew concerned after learning that the state had issued Licitación CEA-PRO-EST-LP-016-25 on April 10, launching the bidding process for the project.
