Dog poisoning alert continues

Several new dog poisoning incidents have been reported to Chapala’s Ecology office over the past two weeks.

Solid facts are not readily available, apparently due to inadequate record keeping aggravated by friction between concerned residents who are trying to keep track of the problem and local authorities.

Citizens clamoring for legal action and a robust investigation to identify those responsible say government officials have not been as cooperative and pro-active as they hoped.

On the other hand, various officials say that leading advocates have yet to provide concrete information on the poisoning cases they have detected so far. The Ministerio Público (district attorney’s office) has only four formal complaints on file to date. The result from a forensic analysis of a sample of meat suspected to be laced with venom was still pending at press time.

Anyone finding an ailing or dead dog or cat on the street is asked to immediately phone 108-0525 or 33-1350-4122 (cell), so that poisoned animals can been retrieved  promptly for appropriate testing and follow-up action.
