Chapala water utility caps 2019 charges

Good news for Chapala taxpayers. The SIMAPA water service authority will hold fees and tariffs for 2019 at the same rate as this year.

The cap was proposed during the October 30 session of the SIMAPA/citizen committee and ratified on November 26 by the agency’s tariffs commission.

In an interview with the Guadalajara Reporter, SIMAPA Director Alfredo Arana Hernández revealed strategies to balance income with operating expenses and outstanding debts. He expects to increase revenue by settling delinquent accounts and reclassifying around 70 percent of users who have been charged minimum rates for more than a decade. Decreasing pumping hours of SIMAPA wells will reduce the high electricity costs, he said.  Arana is also promoting the installation of water meters to lower customer bills and encourage water conservation.
