The inauguration of the Poco a Poco San Pedro Community Center was celebrated on Wednesday, May 8 with around 50 volunteers, supporters and people wanting to learn more about the project joining the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Before the opening, volunteers and local residents helped plant trees on the street, donated by Senderos de México. Neighbors had previously swept the long dirt access road and cleaned up trash from the field below.
Anita Torres, who heads Poco a Poco in San Pedro Itzicán, thanked everyone for helping to make her dream come true. She is thrilled to finally have a building to serve the community with programs, services and free meals for children.
Members of the Poco a Poco San Pedro Itzicán steering committee present for the occasion were Anita Torres, Doris Wakeman, Francisco Nava, Kari Higgins, Carrie Hemphill, Jan Chakravarthy and Charles Chartier. Laura Michael and Gaby de Obeso were unable to attend.
Special guests included Tec de Monterrey architectural students Oscar Poblete and Uriel Medina, who attended the event to see their design plans transformed into reality.
Some 60 children patiently waited out the opening formalities before enjoying their first comida at the facility, served by the Poco a Poco volunteers and friends.
